WHEN it comes to designing a dream home, many of us feel overwhelmed with all the choices and decisions.
Without any experience, it’s hard to know which elements will make your home look nice and which you’ll come to regret.
An interior design expert named Gilla Leigh, who goes by @gillaleighhome.designs on TikTok, revealed her eight tips to make any home feel larger and more luxe.
CURTAIN RODS
Although you may be tempted to hang your curtains right where the top of the window begins, Gilla said this is a mistake.
She said to raise the curtain rods high up if you want to accentuate the ceiling height and therefore make the room look bigger.
ROOM CORNERS
To avoid clutter, Gilla advised that you keep the corners of your rooms empty.

These tight spaces often get stuffed with leftover items or décor elements like a faux plant, but doing so will cut the room’s size tremendously.
ACCENT FURNITURE
“Use less accent furniture pieces,” Gilla warned.
While it’s fun to purchase a bunch of floating chairs and side tables, doing so will just limit the amount of free space in your room.
ARTWORK
Who can resist a great piece of art?
To make the most of your walls, Gilla said to aim for larger-scale artwork, as this will expand the room as a whole.
LIGHTING
A dark room is a cramped room.
“Open the blinds for more natural light,” Gilla said.
ACCESSORIES
Just like in fashion, in home design there is a limit to how many accessories you should use.
Don’t overdo it or you’ll risk making your space look tight.
FURNITURE SIZE
While it may be tempting to squeeze the biggest couch into your tiny living room, Gilla said to resist the urge.
Instead, opt for smaller-scale furniture that will be appealing to the eye.
LESS CLUTTER

And finally, it will likely come as no surprise that a cluttered home feels like a small home.
This summer, go through all those packed closets and purge the things that don’t serve you to make your home feel more spacious.
